Writing a poem is merely expressing yourself in an artistic light. There are many things that you should know about when it comes to writing poetry, but an important thing you must understand is that you shouldn’t limit yourself. Durga Madiraju, an experienced software engineer and a poet, writes all of her poetry on a variety of different themes. Here are a few simple tips on getting started with poetry.

Find a Suitable Theme: A poem is a short literary work characterized by its singular form. Since it is a matter of celebrating or denouncing a subject that is particularly dear to your heart, it is better to devote yourself to a unique theme without going too far. Love, suffering, life, etc., are universal themes that are often found in poetry. It is up to you to make an allegory of what inspires you, so that the verses of your poem will gravitate around this simple word to become something sublime.

Defining a lexical field: Once you settle on a theme, you need to define a lexical field.  Listing different words will help you compose beautiful verses, and the richness of your vocabulary will guide readers to better understand what you have tried to illustrate through your poem.

Simple and melodious words: One does not improvise or replicate Baudelaire overnight. If you are into poetry for the first time, prefer terse and harmonious phrases, without embarking on clumsy lyrical flights. Favor the words you know and let your pen guide you in a natural manner.

Writing beautiful verses: The verse gives the rhythm to the stanza and is measured in the number of syllables. It will be said that it is monosyllabic up to the 12-syllable verse, so it’s important that you focus on the different kinds of verses that you write.

Choosing Prose: The prose is the free form par excellence: devoid of rhyme, it does not count either the words or gives importance to the length and number of stanzas. That being said, you will still need to be imaginative for your stylistic processes, and the melody of your rhythm.

Let your emotions speak: To write a beautiful poem, let your heart express!  The most beautiful verses reflect the soul of the poet, and it is up to you to find the balance and make that soul of a writer within you to sail.
